The Vineyard is one of the most picturesque in the world. If you tire of watching the vines grow, the view can certainly cope with the scrutiny! You can gaze over rolling countryside down to the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, scattered with Islands, and out to the distant City beyond. Mudbrick vineyard works from two different sites which have quite varied terrain, with Mudbrick being planted on mostly north facing clay slopes and a closer maritime influence and Shepherds Point vineyard laying on gently undulating terrain, within a valley, under the protection of the long Stonyridge. One of the advantages of having two sites is that they can blend separate wines together to produce a more complex and rewarding result. Differences can be exemplified with their Merlot batches where Shepherds Point provides a strong leather character and Mudbrick gives dense chocolate and plum characters. Selection between and within these different sites adds greater complexity and reward. |

The 9 hectares planted at Obsidian vineyard is located in the coastal hills of the Onetangi viticultural area, close to the sea on the northern shores of Waiheke Island. The vines are planted on steep slopes in an amphitheatre-like setting, and the high heat summation, combined with advanced viticulture, enables the grapes to achieve full ripeness. The Obsidian vineyard was planted in 1993 with the express purpose of producing a great Bordeaux-style red. However since that time new varieties have been introduced and Obsidian now has eight different varieties of interesting wines in its portoflio, including a new variety to Waiheke Island, Montepulciano. Obsidian's first vintage of this grape variety won a coveted Trophy and Gold Medal in the Romoe Bragato 2007 Wine Awards. The flagship wine Obsidian is a classic blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, malbec and petit verdot. In 2000 the Weeping Sands label was introduced. Weeping Sands is made with the same meticulous care and attention as Obsidian, but for earlier drinking. With each vintage, Obsidian has received more and more accolades and is becoming recognised as a wine with excellent cellaring potential and the complexity to partner very well with food. |

Passage Rock Wines is the holder of more awards and medals than any other Waiheke Island Winery. Passage Rock Wines was established in 1994 by David and Veronika Evans-Gander. This boutique winery is set apart by its location and its focus on Syrah. Passage Rock has brought home 8 gold medals and 2 trophys for its Syrah in the last 4 years. David and Veronika's aim is to work harmoniously with the seasons the sites and the people involved in their operation to produce ripe, full bodied red wines made of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah grapes. The white styles have pronounced fruit flavours. These include a fruity Pinot Gris, a succulent Viognier and a Waiheke Island grown Sauvignon Blanc. The philosophy is to consistently make premium wines through careful observation and selection throughout the whole grape growing and wine making process. A strong desire to work sustainably means the Swiss integrated wine production methods are followed in the vineyard. |
